Gwinnett Police have arrested the father of a 2-year-old boy who died last year after ingesting a lethal amount of oxycodone.
Police said Kurt Vanpool, 34, of Hoschton, has been jailed on charges of murder and cruelty to children for the April 19, 2013 death of Hunter Vanpool at 4885 Trilogy Park Trail in unincorporated Hoschton. This is in the same subdivision as where a 19-year-old man was arrested and charged earlier this week for stabbing to death his father.
Hunter Vanpool was found unresponsive and declared dead at the scene when authorities answered a medical call at the Hoschton-area home, located not far from Mill Creek High School.
Police spokesman Cpl. Ed Ritter said in an email that an autopsy revealed the child died from a lethal amount of oxycodone and the county medical examiner ruled the death was a homicide.
Ritter said in the email:
“Investigators learned that the child’s father, 34-year-old, Kurt Vanpool obtained oxycodone and took some of the medication during the middle of the night. Mr. Vanpool claimed that at some point during the night, Hunter was able to ingest some of the oxycodone and died. Based on the negligence of Mr. Vanpool using an illegal drug in the presence of his child and leaving that drug in an area where the child could ingest it, homicide investigators charged Mr. Vanpool with one count of Felony Murder and one count of Cruelty to Children 2nd degree.”
Vanpool was arrested Thursday and booked into the Gwinnett County jail after 5 p.m. He is being without bond.
